Developers are exposing their Git directories to the world

Git is a developer’s best friend… except when it’s not used properly and exposes a site’s security. The tool is used for version control. It tracks changes to code over time, so that multiple developers can work together efficiently and roll back if they need to. Git is also the core tool used to contribute to social coding site GitHub, though they aren’t the same thing. It’s a glorious tool and fairly straightforward to use, but has a steep learning curve, as most of the interactions you’ll have with it are through the command line. Git can also catch inexperienced developers off guard.http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/07/27/a-simple-developer-error-is-exposing-private-information-on-thousands-of-websites/

City Directories for Genealogy Research

Recently, I discovered proof of a thrilling family story in a very unexpected place. I had looked for this proof on birth, death and marriage records, in the federal and state census, and just about everywhere else I could possibly think of. But, just when I thought I had exhausted all reasonable possibilities, it turned up suddenly in a location I had only stumbled on by accident. A city directory.http://familyhistorydaily.com/free-genealogy-resources/city-directories-genealogy/

Internet Marketing: Why Local Business Directories Matter

Local business directories are an often overlooked key in consumers’ purchase process. These sites serve as portals that lead customers to the business they need. Since the directory sites have a larger marketing budget than most single small businesses, they are able to use that to generate visibility, promote brand recognition, and drive traffic. As a result, they perform well in organic search ranks, often for keywords that are important to businesses. It’s a “shortcut” of sorts to be listed in these directories – you’ll benefit from that high search rank immediately upon being listed, without as large of an investment in your SEO strategy. In fact, simply being listed can assist your website’s SEO, since accurate mentions of your business’s name, address, and phone number can boost your rank with organic search and Google Places. 70 years ago, six Philly women became the world's first digital computer programmers

For most of us born with both feet firmly planted in the information age, it's far too easy to take modern computers and the internet for granted. We'll complain about the latest comic book movie's less-than-perfect CGI, sigh loudly if our movie doesn't load instantly on Netflix, and we can't even imagine life without smartphones anymore. But in the early 1940s, before the dawn of the Digital Revolution, only a handful of computers existed in the entire world. These were built and owned by large research institutions like Harvard University and Bell Laboratories, and ran about a billion times slower than today's computers. Even the word “computers” back then commonly referred not to machines, but to people — mostly women who used adding machines to calculate ballistics trajectories during wartime. Some of those calculations could take up to 12 hours on an adding machine. ENIAC would reduce that to 30 seconds. http://www.phillyvoice.com/70-years-ago-six-philly-women-eniac-digital-computer-programmers/

Digital manufacturing: The revolution will be virtualized

The digital revolution is now breaching the walls of manufacturing as it continues to disrupt media, finance, consumer products, healthcare, and other sectors. Indeed, the explosion in data and new computing capabilities—along with advances in other areas such as artificial intelligence, automation and robotics, additive technology, and human-machine interaction—are unleashing innovations that will change the nature of manufacturing itself. Industry and academic leaders agree that digital-manufacturing technologies will transform every link in the manufacturing value chain, from research and development, supply chain, and factory operations to marketing, sales, and service. Digital connectivity among designers, managers, workers, consumers, and physical industrial assets will unlock enormous value and change the manufacturing landscape forever. http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/operations/our-insights/digital-manufacturing-the-revolution-will-be-virtualized

Wow: Southlake Mall to get digital river and virtual trees

Southlake Mall in Hobart is getting a park with a river, trees and fish – only it's all digital. Visitors can create digital blooms and fish at seven iPad stations along the virtual river. They can even skip virtual stones across the water. Indiana's first state-of-the-art interactive digital river will flow through the mall's remodeled center court, which has been renamed "The Docks." New owner Starwood Retail removed the carousel that had been there after buying the 1.36 million-square-foot super-regional mall at U.S. 30 and Mississippi Street from Westfield in 2013. http://www.nwitimes.com/business/local/wow-southlake-mall-to-get-digital-river-and-virtual-trees/article_c79fcd77-bd72-54d6-b29a-c5d6d71e6c9b.html

Oculus Rift Creator Palmer Luckey: Virtual Reality Future Will Be 'More Boring Than We Think' : All Tech Considered : NPR

The much-hyped consumer virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift, is finally hitting the market. The reviews have been mixed. As The Wall Street Journal put it, "the first totally immersive home virtual reality rig is a pricey, awkward, isolating—and occasionally brilliant—glimpse of the future of computing." But behind this poster child of at-home virtual reality products is a man, 23-year-old Palmer Luckey, who invented the device while still in his teens and founded the company Oculus VR, which is now owned by Facebook. http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2016/03/28/472168507/virtual-reality-whiz-palmer-luckey-future-will-be-more-boring-than-we-think

Artificial intelligence social network offers 'digital immortality' through virtual counterpart

A new social network has launched that offers users the chance to live forever through an artificial intelligence counterpart that learns from their thoughts and actions to post and interact in their absence. ETER9 (pronounced ee-ter-nine) is the brainchild of Portuguese IT company AUTO.NET, who wanted to provide people with "the elixir of eternity". Through a user's comments, posts and interactions with other members, the AI counterpart is able to learn the likes, interests and personality of a user. Virtual memories are formed in a section of the site called the Cortex, which the AI draws on to keep publishing even when the user is not online. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/artificial-intelligence-social-network-offers-digital-immortality-through-virtual-counterpart-1516296

Digital Marketing: How to Effectively Build Leads - Virtual Social Media

As a marketing leader, spending an enormous sum of money on advertising without having a reliable product design is illogical. But this has become a trend now, with people trying to push simple messages across the digital space regarding their product or brand as quickly as possible to gain visibility. Most of the brands are failing in digital advertising aspect and are highly depending on consultants to provide them with a quick fix. Many assume that ‘digital marketing’ is a kind of magical platform that could be used to solve all their marketing issues. This is a wrong notion that is being circulated by the digital shops or the consultants themselves to do their business. They usually promise more visibility on the web, increase in site traffic, more popularity to the site or even a set of followers for the brand. Such hollow promises eventually end up with poor returns, exaggerated or incorrect reports, and end up giving a knock to the brand. http://www.virtualsocialmedia.com/digital-marketing-how-to-effectively-build-leads/

Can virtual reality save digital advertising from itself? These companies are betting on it

Facebook, Samsung, Microsoft and Google, among others, are all betting big on virtual reality and/or augmented reality becoming the next big platform. With its predicted rise, virtual reality/augmented reality is also poised to transform digital advertising. Several companies are aiming to be ahead of the curve. We talked to two, each coming at VR advertising from a different direction. Immersv’s an ad platform that enables VR app developers to monetize their content with ads on Google Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR devices. The Los Angeles-based company launched the platform in March with app-install ads from other VR app developers. The ads serve in custom VR environments and can display as 3-D video, flat 2-D video, 360-degree videos or as true VR ad experiences that users can virtually enter and explore. http://marketingland.com/can-virtual-reality-save-digital-advertising-companies-betting-177565

MediaMonks acquires Stopp, adding virtual reality expertise to its digital toolkit

If the business world had doubts about the economic potential of virtual reality, they were likely allayed when Facebook dropped $2 billion last year to acquire VR gaming company Oculus. Making the announcement, founder Mark Zuckerberg explained that, although mobile is the platform of today, the company was getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow. Tomorrow may be closer than expected. Oculus, Sony, Samsung and HTC/Valve all have virtual reality headsets hitting the consumer market soon. And just a few weeks ago, The New York Times distributed Google Cardboard viewers to subscribers to give readers 360-degree immersive experiences of its stories. The coming year is predicted to be the year of virtual reality and, like so many content creators and tech developers, digital production force MediaMonks is making sure it's ready for it. http://www.campaignlive.com/article/mediamonks-acquires-stopp-adding-virtual-reality-expertise-its-digital-toolkit/1375199

Tripping Through Digital Landscapes in Virtual Reality and on Canvas

The works in Rachel Rossin’s show at Zieher Smith & Horton unfold sequentially, like the illustrations of an idea that is carefully trying to prove itself. The exhibition’s theme is loss, or, per the show’s title, Lossy, a term describing the loss of visual detail that results from data compression. http://hyperallergic.com/252786/tripping-through-digital-landscapes-in-virtual-reality-and-on-canvas/
